As a member of the Energy Community, Serbia has committed to adopting core European Union energy legislation that supports an integrated and transparent regional energy market, encourages clean energy investment, and lowers greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Serbia has already published national-level renewable energy and energy efficiency action plans to guide low emission growth in the energy sector.
Through the EC-LEDS program, Serbia and the United States are working with regional energy regulators to harmonize the policy, legal, and regulatory frameworks for renewable energy development to support implementation of the Energy Community goals.
Accomplishments and Progress
Clean Electricity National Roadmap Adopted. With U.S. support, Serbia, along with seven other eastern European countries, developed and adopted a national roadmap to support a regional regulatory environment that will facilitate competitive retail electricity market development. Together, these retail electricity markets will enable consumers to choose where their energy comes from, including cleaner options. - 2016
Promoting Reliable Distribution Interconnections. U.S. technical experts are working with distribution system operators (DSOs) in Serbia to improve the climate resilience of their power distribution systems. Serbian DSOs are enacting recommendations from an innovative regional benchmarking study on service quality and system reliability. Reliable transmission and distribution infrastructure throughout the region is needed for the cross border trade of electricity generated by clean and innovative energy technologies. – Ongoing
Regional Transmission Planning Supported. U.S. grid infrastructure experts collaborated with electricity transmission system operators in Serbia and other eastern and southeastern European countries to identify and prioritize regional transmission investments that are needed to expand regional electricity investment and trade and to support integration of large-scale wind power development throughout the region. – 2014
