Ethiopia is a leader among least-developed countries on climate change action and has been pursuing a low-carbon development pathway since the launch of its Climate-Resilient Green Economy (CRGE) strategy in 2011. The CRGE provides an economy-wide blueprint to achieve middle-income, carbon neutral status by 2030 and prioritizes both climate resilience measures and mitigation activities.
Through targeted technical assistance from the EC-LEDS program, Ethiopia and the United States are working together to achieve its national climate goals.
Accomplishments and Progress
Assessing Resilience and Mitigation Measures in the Industrial Sector. The industrial sector is one of six priority mitigation sectors in Ethiopia’s nationally determined contribution. EC-LEDS conducted a rapid assessment of the current status of CRGE implementation within the Ministry of Industry and related governmental institutes. The assessment will serve as the basis for targeted interventions to strengthen resilience and enhance mitigation measures over the next two years. – 2016
Enhancing Public Participation in Ethiopia’s NDC. The EC-LEDS program is supporting regional and sectoral efforts to mainstream public engagement in CRGE implementation activities. As a result of public engagement training and broad buy-in, Ethiopia’s Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has adopted public engagement as a major deliverable. All regions have been given engagement targets, totaling 12 million people. – Ongoing
Strengthening Institutions. Working with Ethiopia’s Ministry of Environment and Forest, the EC-LEDS program is supporting a CRGE advisor to help the Government of Ethiopia integrate climate change into the development plans of key sectors—forestry and transportation. Coordination within and across the government is critical to the success of Ethiopia’s long-term, low emission development strategy (LEDS). – Ongoing
